Beta Version of harmonised Life Cycle Assessment methodology for agrifood products for Ecolabelling is open for consultation
We’re thrilled to announce that the ECO FOOD CHOICE project has published the beta version of the harmonised Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) methodology for agrifood products as basis for ecolabelling. This latest framework offers clear, step-by-step guidance, from developing Life Cycle Inventory (LCI) databases to the final calculation of an aggregated environmental score. corsus is part of the consortium and contributed with its to the development of the methodology.
Specifically:
- It builds upon the PEF (Product Environmental Footprint) framework while addressing key limitations.
- It introduces practical, streamlined improvements that enhance usability and applicability.
- It covers the entire Cradle-to-Grave life cycle, including raw material acquisition, processing, packaging, distribution, consumption, and end of life treatment.
- It establishes a robust approach for data quality, allocation rules, default values, hotspot analysis, biodiversity impact, and aggregation into a single environmental score.
- Most importantly, it is now open for public consultation, your feedback matters. The methodology is open for consultation until 10 October 2025.
How You Can Get Involved
We’re inviting voices from all corners of the food systems and sustainability communities (producers, processors, retailers, policymakers, researchers, NGOs) to review the methodology, share insights, suggest improvements, and raise questions. Your perspectives will help ensure the final version is not only rigorous, but also practical and widely applicable.
- You can access the document here and the feedback form here (to be sent back to coudert@ademe.fr).
- A live Q&A is scheduled on October 2, 11:00 AM–12:00 PM CEST. This will be a technical methodological conversation, with very little presentation time. Attendees are expected to read the methodology and prepare questions in advance >> Register here
The Eco Food Choice project brings together researchers and industry experts to develop a harmonised environmental labelling system for food products across Europe by 2028. Co-funded by the EU LIFE programme, it unites nine partners from France, Spain, Germany, and the Netherlands, experts in agriculture, data management, life cycle assessment, and consumer science. As part of this collective effort, the consortium is working step by step to design the scientific backbone of the future ecolabel. One of the most important milestones in this process has just been reached. corsus is proud to be part of this consortium, contributing its expertise to the development of practical and scientifically sound solutions.
