corsus at the 14th International Life Cycle Assessment Conference for Food in Barcelona
The International LCAFood 2024 Conference took place in Barcelona from 8 to 12 September. It was the 14th edition of the biennial conference. It is an important event for the international scientific community and stakeholders involved in the life cycle assessment (LCA) of food systems. corsus was represented by six experts and presented its expertise for sustainable food systems.

New insights from the LCA Food conference
The conference provided a platform for scientists and experts to discuss the latest research findings on life cycle assessment of food systems, which are essential for the transformation to sustainable food systems.
Key topics included the impact of land use on the environment (such as biodiversity, see also [1]), the growing importance of ecolabelling as a guide for consumers in particular (see [2] and [3]) and the Nutritional Functional Unit approach, which integrates the nutritional quality of a food into the reference unit of the LCA.
These focal points of the conference are also reflected in the work of corsus. Felix Lücking, Ulrike Eberle (PhD) and Marius Rödder presented results from their work on ecolabelling projects, while Julian Quandt, Sarah Schlüpmann and Ulrike Eberle presented results on the Nutritional Functional Unit. In addition, Julian Quandt and Nico Mumm presented methodological developments for assessing the impact on biodiversity from their research at the University of Augsburg.
Since 2010, corsus has been present at each of the LCA Food conferences presenting research results. In addition, Dr Ulrike Eberle, one of the two managing partners of corsus, has been a member of the conference’s scientific committee since 2011. In this role, she also chaired two of the thematic sessions at this conference, illustrating corsus’ scientific expertise and commitment to sustainable food systems.

corsus is a partner for sustainable food systems
Sustainable food systems are crucial for a healthy planet. The findings of the conference will directly feed into our further work on scientifically sound and practical solutions. corsus will continue to actively shape the discourse on this topic and support political actors, municipalities, institutions and companies in implementing an environmentally friendly and health-promoting, ethically responsible diet that is appropriate for everyday’s life and enables socio-cultural diversity.
We would like to thank the organisers of LCA Food 2024, in particular IRTA and Montse Núñez, for the successful conference and the very good exchange, embedded in the lively culture and historic buildings of a city steeped in history.
