corsus prepares for LCAFood 2024 in Barcelona

corsus team members are preparing to present their findings and results in the field of sustainable food systems at the international conference on food life cycle assessment LCAFood 2024 from 8 to 11 September in Barcelona. Five corsus employees will present their results from the combination of research and practice on the following topics at the conference::

  • Identification of the main environmental impacts of food
  • Biodiversity impacts of major crops
  • Sustainability and nutritional profile of alternative protein sources
  • Complexity reduction for a single-score for food
  • Assessing the cumulative impact of fisheries on the quality of marine ecosystems
  • Environmental labelling of food – exploring the interactions between methodological challenges and stakeholder interests

Since the mid-1990s, the FoodLCA conference has been a pioneer in the discussion and exchange on sustainability in food systems. It takes place every two years, alternating between Europe and other continents. In almost 30 years, it has developed into the world’s leading forum for sustainable food. The conference gathers hundreds of environmental experts from different sectors (universities, private sector and public organisations) to share and develop knowledge on life cycle assessment for food and related tools.

Venue of LCAFOOD 2024: Campus University of  Barcelona

Managing Partner Ulrike Eberle has been a member of the FoodLCA Scientific Committee since 2012 and was Chair of the committee from 2018 to 2020. She will also chair two sessions this year: Circular food systems on 10 September and Food loss and waste: environmental impacts and solutions (9.11.24, 11.30h-13.00h).

At the conference, corsus team members will present the results of various projects. Felix Lücking and Ulrike Eberle will present results from the project CLIF – Climate Impacts of Food. Ulrike Eberle will also explain the most important environmental impacts of our food systems. Felix Lücking will present findings on complexity reduction for a single score for food in the Ecolabelling session on 10 September. The guiding question was which impact categories need to be included without considerably reducing the significance of the single score. Nico Mumm presents his poster on the assessment of cumulative impacts of fisheries on the quality of marine ecosystems as part of his doctorate at the University of Augsburg. Marius Rödder presents results on the interactions between methodological challenges and stakeholder interests in the conceptualisation of an environmental label for food.

Julian Quandt will give a talk on 11 September on Biodiversity impacts of major crops – Spatially explicit characterization factors for 152 major crops and will give another presentation on the inclusion of protein quality and nutrient density in the LCIA of novel foods. He works at corsus research gUG on the project ‘StrahL – Target group-orientated strategies for more domestic legume consumption’ under the direction of the University of Bonn in collaboration with Zühlsdorf und Partner, Fulda University of Applied Sciences and the University of Göttingen . corsus research is investigating the environmental impact of the production of domestic and imported legumes and current eating styles in Germany.

Participants of the conference can find the dates and rooms of the presentations under this link and the posters here. We look forward to exciting discussions and exchanges with international experts.

corsus research gUG develops transdisciplinary knowledge to implement the urgently needed socio-ecological change. The findings derived from this are applied by corsus GmbH in its consulting practice in cooperation with companies.
