Dr. Ulrike Eberle has been appointed to the expert advisory board of the Federal Award “Too good for the ton!

The Federal Award “Too good for the ton” of the Federal Ministry of Food and Agriculture honours initiatives and projects against food waste and for more appreciation. Dr. Ulrike Eberle has now been appointed to the expert advisory board of the Federal Award.

“Food is valuable – this is being perceived less and less today, says Ulrike Eberle, “not only is it ethically questionable to deal with it in a wasteful manner, but the environment is also unnecessarily polluted.

I am looking forward to many good ideas and projects to avoid this waste and thus contribute to more valuing food.

Around 20 million tonnes of greenhouse gases are emitted each year in Germany as a result of avoidable food losses. 20,000 square kilometres of agricultural land are unnecessarily occupied in Germany and worldwide – an area roughly the size of Hesse. In addition, a good 100 million cubic metres of water are wasted for irrigation to produce food that is not eaten but is sorted out or thrown away on the way from the field to the plate.
