From report to strategy – where does Hamburg stand in terms of sustainability?

On 19 September, the Hamburg Sustainability Forum and the Hamburg Future Council invite you to a discussion evening on the sustainable future of Hamburg in the Saalhaus of the Patriotische Gesellschaft. Dr Anke Butscher, managing partner of corsus, will moderate the event entitled ‘From report to strategy – where does Hamburg stand in terms of sustainability?’.

Priscilla Owosekun-Wilm from the FHH’s Sustainability Unit will provide an introductory overview of the implementation of the 17 UN Sustainable Development Goals in Hamburg. Afterwards, Prof. Dr Laura-Marie Edinger-Schons (Chief Sustainability Officer, University of Hamburg), Hamburg’s Senator for Finance Dr Andreas Dressel, Helena Peltonen-Gassmann (Spokesperson of the Coordination Group of the Hamburg Future Council) and Dr Kai Hünemörder (Head of ZEWU at the Chamber of Skilled Crafts and Spokesperson for the Climate Working Group, Hamburg Sustainability Forum) will discuss the current status and future of sustainability in Hamburg under the direction of Anke Butscher. The discussion will focus on the progress and challenges of the City of Hamburg’s current sustainability efforts. With the Voluntary Local Review (VLR) 2023, the city has published its first sustainability report. In the future, the focus will be on identifying important transformation paths, securing funding for a sustainability transformation and structurally anchoring cooperation between the authorities. Important topics include the involvement of civil society and science in the process – from the development of a sustainability strategy to systematic embedding. The audience will have the opportunity to ask questions. Afterwards, an informal get-together with snacks and drinks is planned until around 7 pm.

The event will take place in preperation of the Hamburg Sustainability Conference, which will be held in Hamburg from 7 to 8 October 2024. The annual conference is a joint initiative of the United Nations (UNDP), the German Federal Government (BMZ), the Michael Otto Foundation and the City of Hamburg. The programme includes three forums on reshaping the international financial architecture, investing for the SDGs and leveraging transformation. The conference will bring together international policymakers, business leaders and civil society representatives to accelerate the realisation of the SDGs.

Anke Butscher already advised and supported the process for the first implementation of the SDGs in Hamburg in 2017, which resulted in the adoption of the printed matter ‘Implementation of the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals in Hamburg’. Anke Butscher moderated the process, which involved relevant Hamburg organisations and representatives of the FHH’s specialist authorities, from taking stock and identifying key challenges to developing a programme of action for Hamburg. This process has led to further engagement with the SDGs in Hamburg. corsus has been supporting municipalities in the development and implementation of sustainability strategies since 2017.
