ECO FOOD CHOICE
The aim of ECO FOOD CHOICE is to develop and test new methods for life cycle inventories and environmental assessments as well as thedevelopment of a food labelling system. The project is being carried out by nine organisations from four EU countries – France, Germany, the Netherlands and Spain. One of the organisations is corsus. corsus is particularly involved in the development of the methodology for life cycle inventories and the application of the method for creating data sets. The results will enable the development of national and regional databases and labelling systems for the environmental impact of food.
In detail, the project includes the following tasks:
- The development of a harmonised methodology for life cycle inventories in Europe and guidelines for the adaptation of life cycle data from one country or region to another. This will be tested by creating data sets for 30 products in three countries (Germany, the Netherlands and Spain).
- The development of a harmonised methodology for aggregating the impact assessment results of the life cycle assessment and, if necessary, supplementing them to calculate a food-environment score and a classification scheme.
- The development of a labelling format and a visual representation to be tested and validated under real conditions with consumers and farmers.
- The pilot projects will be carried out in supermarkets and canteens in France, Germany, the Netherlands and Spain, reaching a total of 56,300 European consumers
- Communication and dissemination activities to distribute the project results at EU level, among researchers, agri-food professionals and authorities.

In september 2025 the ECO FOOD CHOICE project has published the beta version of the harmonised Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) methodology for agrifood products as basis for ecolabelling. This latest framework offers clear, step-by-step guidance, from developing Life Cycle Inventory (LCI) databases to the final calculation of an aggregated environmental score. Read more in our news.
