Sustainability strategy agreed for Sankt Peter-Ording

The coastal community and popular tourist destination of St. Peter-Ording adopts its sustainability strategy to implement the “Sustainable Sankt Peter-Ording” local development concept. corsus advised and supported Sankt Peter-Ording throughout the entire process.

Two years ago, Sankt Peter-Ording embarked on a journey towards sustainability as part of the “Globally Sustainable Municipality Schleswig-Holstein” project. An inventory based on the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and the newly created local development concept formed the basis for the development of the sustainability strategy. The strategy comprises three fields of action – environmental and resource protection and sustainable mobility, quality tourism and sustainable business, community life and sustainable construction and housing – with a total of 13 strategic and 40 operational goals as well as 119 measures. The sustainability strategy was adopted at the end of January 2024 with majority political approval.

As a coastal community and attractive tourist destination, the municipality focuses on sustainable tourism offers, transparent and fair working conditions in the tourism industry and the preservation and protection of nature. The transport concept focuses on public transport and alternatives to motorised private transport. Important for local people are the issues of sustainable and affordable housing, a needs-based infrastructure for all generations, educational infrastructure, attractive year-round offers for local citizens and basic medical care. All of these aspects are anchored in the sustainability strategy.

Those involved in developing the strategy included the municipality’s administration, the Eiderstedt Office, local politicians and many voluntary representatives from the specialist community, such as nature and environmental protection, healthcare, tourism and business.

A citizens’ event was held on 19 March to present the sustainability strategy and to open up the space to discuss the goals and measures set with the residents of Sankt Peter-Ording and to involve them in the further process. The citizens’ comments will be incorporated into the implementation and monitoring of the sustainability strategy. Lina Koop, Sustainability Manager from Neustadt in Holstein, gave a very vivid report on the development and implementation process of Neustadt’s sustainability strategy.
