Sustainability strategy agreed for the Föhr-Amrum region
In mid-March, the Föhr-Amrum Office adopted a comprehensive sustainability strategy as a roadmap for the future of the two North Sea islands. Over the past year, corsus has intensively advised and supported the development of the sustainability strategy.
Together with Hannah Heinevetter, corsus had already drawn up an inventory of the implementation of the 17 United Nations Sustainable Development Goals for the Föhr-Amrum office in 2023. The inventory formed the basis for the development of the municipal sustainability strategy for the office and its 15 municipalities. It was developed in collaboration with local politicians, administrative staff and organised civil society.
The first workshops were held in April 2024 to develop the mission statement, guiding principles and strategic goals for the strategy’s five fields of action, e.g. for sustainable tourism development in a balance between a place to live and a holiday destination or for a renewable and environmentally friendly energy supply with regional value creation.
The following mission statement was formulated for both islands as the basis for the objectives and guidelines:
Föhr and Amrum – for a shared, sustainable tomorrow. Our island life is characterised by sustainable, open cooperation and a unique natural environment that is worth preserving. We are building the future of the islands for locals and visitors alike on an ecologically aware and economically sound basis.
In July 2024, it became concrete and the employees of the administration and the representatives of local politics jointly derived measurable operational goals from the vision. They form the basis for the 238 individual measures in the strategy. These were drafted in online workshops within the administration at the beginning of 2025 and reviewed and adapted by representatives of local politics and organised civil society in February 2025. In March, the local authority committee unanimously adopted the sustainability strategy of the Föhr-Amrum authority.
The sustainability strategy comprises 5 fields of action with a total of 28 strategic goals, almost 100 operational goals and 238 measures. The project was funded by the Service Agency Communities in One World (SKEW).
We would like to thank everyone who has worked with us through this complex process and contributed their time and commitment. We are looking forward to the implementation of the strategy and the transformation of the two North Sea islands of Föhr and Amrum.
