On 22 September, the European Federation of Food Science and Technology (EFFoST) organised the online seminar ‘Sustainability Assessment of the Food Chain’. The seminar attracted well over a hundred interested participants. The introductory lecture was given by Dr Ulrike Eberle of corsus.
2020 / 21 is the Science Year of the Bioeconomy. The aim is to show “which bioeconomic approaches science and research can already use today to help achieve the Sustainable Development Goals”. In the column “Heads of Change”, experts provide insights into research approaches and questions that arise with regard to the necessary socio-ecological change. Dr Ulrike Eberle from corsus is one of these experts.
In the current episode of the Scientists for Future podcast, Dr. Ulrike Eberle, together with WWF Germany’s Tanja Dräger de Teran, presents the sometimes surprising results of the study on water consumption.
Every year, around 12 million tonnes of food are thrown away in Germany. An unimaginably large number. And one thing is clear: every tomato that is disposed of, every apple that is thrown away, every milk that has gone bad, every portion of food of which half went back would have been better eaten.
Part 2 of the study on the environmental impact of German food, conducted by corsus on behalf of WWF-Germany, was published today. In the second part of the study, the focus is on water consumption and the water scarcity footprint of the German diet.
Although the protection and promotion of biodiversity is one of the greatest challenges of our time, it is difficult to measure the impact of products and services on biodiversity. Dr. Ulrike Eberle, Managing partner of corsus, has been involved in developing a method to estimate the impact on biodiversity for life cycle assessments.
Following the example of France and Great Britain, there is now also a Citizens’ Climate Council in Germany. The task of the Citizens’ Council, which consists of 160 randomly selected citizens, is to jointly discuss how “compliance with the German climate protection targets can be achieved fairly for all”. They will be accompanied by “leading experts from science and business”. Dr Ulrike Eberle from corsus is one of these experts. She will speak this evening at the Citizens’ Council on food and climate change and recommendations for sustainable nutrition.
In the SWR programme Marktcheck, Dr. Ulrike Eberle from corsus was interviewed about the environmental impact of asparagus. The question was how the carbon footprint of imported asparagus compares to local asparagus from Germany. The results are clear: asparagus from Germany, which is also consumed locally, performs best.
FRoSTA has won the German Sustainability Award for the third time – this time the special prize Packaging for a pure paper packaging for frozen food.
The conference proceedings of the 12th International Food LCA Conference are available online. The conference, which this year had the motto “Towards sustainable agri-food systems”, took place virtually for the first time due to the corona pandemic.
