Municipality of St. Peter-Ording nominated for first German SDG Award at UN Climate Change Conference

The municipality of St. Peter-Ording was nominated on November 9 at the UN Climate Change Conference in Sharm El Sheikh, Egypt for the first German SDG Award (Sustainable Development Goals) of the Senate of the German Economy in the category “Cities, Municipalities & Counties” out of more than 100 applications. This recognizes the local development concept “Sustainable St. Peter-Ording” as an exemplary project that is consistently aligned with the 17 UN Sustainable Development Goals.

Sustainability controlling is a key area for advancing a sustainable transformation in companies in a systematic and fact-based manner. Empirical studies show, however, that controllers hardly deal with sustainability at all. In search of the reasons, Julius Wenzig, Anne-Katrin Nuzum and Prof. Dr. Stefan Schaltegger wrote an article that was recently published in the renowned journal Business Strategy & the Environment. The article is freely available in Germany via Wiley Verlag.

On 29.09.2022 the well-attended public event of the model region Bastauniederung took place in the community center in Rothenuffeln. Of the more than one hundred visitors, agriculture was most strongly represented, but nature conservation, schools, interested citizens and the press were also present. The event was accompanied and documented by the graphical recording of Jai Wanigesinghe.

On behalf of the Service Agency Communities in One World (SKEW), corsus advises and supports the city of Kiel in the development and implementation of an impact-oriented budget. An article on the model project has now been published by Julius Wenzig, Senior Consultant at corsus, and Sebastian Ohlmeyer, Project Manager “Globally Sustainable Municipality” at SKEW. The article is part of a dossier published by SKEW in cooperation with the editorial team of “welt-sichten”.

Sustainability and the Common Good in Municipalities – Study on Principles, Instruments and Practices Published

Municipalities in Germany are increasingly basing their strategic development on the guiding principles of sustainability or the common good. Both concepts complement each other and can be developed and implemented in an integrated way. This is the central finding of a study by the Bertelsmann Stiftung, the European Secretariat of ICLEI and the International Association for the Promotion of the Common Good Economy.

In Germany, around one in six euros is spent by the public sector (federal, state and local authorities). With this procurement volume of over €350 billion per year – or around 13% of the gross domestic product – the public sector has a decisive share in the demand for sustainable products and services. Slightly more than half of this expenditure is accounted for by municipal institutions. The switch to fair sustainable procurement holds great potential here.
